藍。 Fade to Blue by city chen

“Fade to Blue” is a duo project with Taiwanese-American guitarist and singer David Chen. Their first concert in 2014 at the Shenzhen Theatre in Guangdong, China, was supposed to be a one-off event, but Yufeng and David had so much fun they decided to continue on. Their lively musical conversations feature an unlikely pair of instruments -- the pipa and resonator guitar --  and an unconventional repertoire that ranges from delta blues to original compositions inspired by folk music from around the world.

This trio project with Swedish folk musicians Daniel Fredriksson and Daniel Pettersson focused on creating a new, fresh soundscape. The “two Daniels” and Yufeng worked together to create a new language for contemporary folk music. For Yufeng, it was a challenge and a joy to find common ground to share between her pipa, Fredriksson’s mandola and Pettersson’s bowed nyckelharpa. As she says: “If I could reinvent the pipa, I would draw inspiration from Scandinavian musicians.”

Chung Yu-Feng with Sambasunda by city chen

Sambasunda is a renowned Gamelan ensemble from Java, Indonesia. Under bandleader Ismet Ruchimat, the group has carved out new territory for traditional music in a contemporary setting. With tones and colors that range from the ancient to the avant-garde, and infused with infectious passion, the band provided an endless well of inspiration for Yufeng, which prompted her to explore new realms on the pipa during their collaboration together.

Chung Yu-Feng with Ramesh Shotham&Zoltan Lantos by city chen

A performance project for the Migration Music Festival in Taipei in 2006. Yufeng played with the highly accomplished Indian percussionist Ramesh Shotham and Hungarian violinist Zoltan Lantos in this cross-genre, cross-cultural collaboration. For Yufeng, working with these two expert musicians created a refreshing, new experience for both the musicians and audience.

Chung Yu-Feng with Matthias Frey by city chen

Matthias Frey is a German pianist and academic who composes for film. Yufeng participated in his project “Crossing Borders,” which also included musicians from Germany, Mongolia, India, Egypt and Israel. Matthia’s approach to composition provided a weightlessness for the pipa’s voice to flow freely. Yufeng and Matthias have also worked together in a duo setting, exploring new narrative ideas by performing live for silent film.

Lute & Lute by city chen

“Lute and Lute” was a project in 2011 celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Migration Music Festival in Taiwan, for which Yufeng teamed up with Palestinian oud player Sameer Makhoul and Indian percussionist Ramesh Shotham. They engaged in a musical dialogue that covered ground in both traditional and contemporary music, pairing ancient instruments together to create a new experience for listeners and musicians alike.
